Signing on the day of the depature of Geremi, Leon also took his squad number, 20. It was said that he was offered the No.9 shirt but he refused it saying he hadn't earned it yet!

He started his career at Southampton as a trainee but only ever made 8 starts for them in the league, with a further 7 substitute appearances, scoring four goals along the way. He also made a substitute appearance for them in the League Cup. For the most part he was sent out on loan, first to Queens Park Rangers (17-12-2004 to 17-01-2005), then two spells at Sheffield Wednesday (05-08-2005 to 10-08-2005 and 31-01-2006 to 01-05-2006), then Bouremouth (03-08-2006 to 03-11-2006) and Yeovil (23-11-2006 to 28-02-2007) before he moved to Coventry City. He spent almost three years there making over 100 appearances in all and scoring 23 goals. The fee, though not officially disclosed was widely rumoured to be £1.3m.

The 2011-12 campaign proved to be a difficult one for Best, with limited first-team opportunities due to injuriy and the fine form of Demba Ba and Pappis Cisse. Within the close-season transfer window Best moved to the npower Championship on a four-year contract with the newly relegated Blackburn Rovers. Again the fee is officially "undisclosed" but is said to be "over £3million". Interestingly enough it was indicated that he was imediately given the Number 9 shirt at Rovers...

Despite being English born, Leon plays for the Republic of Ireland, making his debut in the draw against Nigeria, 25/05/2009, after having previously been in their under-21 team.
