Ted was only brought to Newcastle so that his elder brother, the legendary George, would sign, as it was made quite plain that they were a 'pair' by their mother! They came from Chile together, (born to a Chilean father and an English mother they emigrated to Brampton, Yorkshire in 1932 due to the political instability in Chile at the time), they signed for Barnsley together and if Newcastle wanted George they had to take Ted as well. A 'joint deal' was negoited bringing both to St. James's Park for a combined fee of £26,500.

Although he was not to have the same impact as his elder sibling, he was nonetheless regarded as a very reliable wing-half. He made most of his appearances in the 1951-52 season, including the FA Cup Final against Arsenal when his brother scored the only goal. At the end of the 1952-53 season Ted was sold to Chilean side Club Social y Deportivo Colo-Colo, given what had went past it was not surprising that his brother George soon followed.

After retiring from football, Ted served on an oil tanker where he died in very mysterious circumstances in 1970. It was rumoured that he was thrown off the tanker and drowned. Setting sail from Dubai to the Gulf it was said that a fight broke out between Ted and the ship's captain, this was vociferously denied by people who knew Ted as he was said to be very mild mannered and that would have been totally out of character. The ship's captain was charged with his murder but then acquited. Ted's body has never been found.
